Self Talk (T.J. Kelly) is a progressive house artist who has steadily risen over the past year and is known for his technicality, attention to detail, and obsession with precision. He creates continuous energy through multi-track layering and sonic blending. With a magnetic stage presence and a deep understanding of crowd psychology, Self Talk aims to turn every set into a journey that entrances his listeners.
The name Self Talk was inspired by the deep therapeutic and emotional breakthroughs T.J. experienced while immersed in the crowd at various shows. He received much of his education and inspiration for DJing first through being in the crowd. These were moments of reflection and healing, where music became his guide. His goal is to create that same powerful inner dialogue in others—the kind that makes you hesitate to leave, caught in that eternal “15 more minutes.”
This identity was born on the beaches of Koh Tao, Thailand, where T.J. performed daily sunsets and fire shows. Noticing his selections induced goosebumps and reflection, he brought that sound back to Philadelphia, further aiming to refine it. He uses his surroundings for inspiration: from the feeling of the venue (concrete warehouse with exposed wood, or somewhere more cush?), atmosphere, and time of day he is playing at to guide his track selection.
A unanimously loved member of the Philadelphia underground, he is first and foremost known for being kind, caring, compassionate; and above all, reliable member of the scene. Outside of his music career, he is a physician, who focused on physically rehabilitating people from devastating, life-altering injuries. He aims to use his professional background to be an easy-to-work-with and flexible and supportive member of any team he joins.
